What is smart card?

There are two factors which define a smart card, how the data is written/read and which chip is contained within the card. The solution which is best suited to your organization is dependent on those two factors.

Types of smart card

There are two types of smart card :
Contact Card: this is the most commonly used smart card, this type must be entered in a card reader as the electrical contacts on the outside of the card need to contact with a card reader. This type is used as a single function card.
Contactless card: this one depend on radio frequencies to transfer data and therefore they don’t have to be put in a card reader, proximity cards are low in price and commonly used in applications like ID cards, Key cards, payment cards, transportation cards… It has less storage than contact card but the convenience of use is highly improved
